Academic underpinnings of political actions

Flattening of hierarchical organizational layers — true for both business bureaucracy and also political decision making

Modi Scraps ministerial panels!   http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Modi-government-scraps-ministerial-panels/articleshow/35862930.cms

So what! What does expect from this, why was this done, why was it said to be done, what will it result into, will decision making be pushed down or upward, will their be centralization or decentralization……….. lots of unanswered questions… is their any received wisdom around us to better understand the move…..  YES there is !!

Look up …. a Harvard paper on the subject …….. http://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Publication%20Files/12-087_bc50bde2-3016-457a-9bee-dc988cb1056b.pdf

The paper, based on an empirical analysis of US business firms, finds that there is evidence of flattening in business organizations. However, though the normal argument is that this empowers the lower levels, there is also evidence that it empowers the top managers more, with larger centralization at the CEO level. Centralization or decentralization does not come by default….    The paper argues and presents evidence that “Flattening at the top is a complex phenomenon that in the end looks more like centralization”…… Should we expect centralization and more empowered ministers in the MODI cabinet!! And with ministers getting overloaded with work……

AAP and AK49

I am not alone, who has been anguished. My elder brother is equally hurt. His email to our personal group … he did give his permission to forward this…
Why Arvind Kejriwal gets slapped often?
Let us start with a small story that most of us read when we were in school-some people may still remember it,but for those who don’t,I will rephrase it as I remember it.
Baba Bharti was an ascetic who had renounced the world, and was spending his days in pursuit of other-worldly activities-whatever they maybe and certainly unspecified.
He, however had a weakness, and that weakness was his thoroughbred horse, that was surely the apple of his eye and the Baba was loathe to part with him, either for money or under coercion-even to the neighbourhood (James Bond)-Dakoo called Khadak Singh.
Khadak Singh finally steals the horse by impersonating as a poor beggar in need of help.Baba Bharti realising the trick that Khadak Singh has played on him, calls after him not to let anyone know of the trick as people would stop trusting the poor.
What Mr.Kejriwal(AK from now on) has done, is what Khadak Singh did when he asked for help in the garb of a poor beggar.
Here was a middle class icon(rising star),who had fulfilled most of the aspirations of middle class parents and neighbours (3 Idiots)-passed IIT,joined IRS,married into ?IRS,spent more than 20 years till he was pensionable, abused the system, never produced anything but cribbed, cribbed and cribbed and then very conveniently become a messiah for all of us-fed up with a weak government(a lot of us on this forum are govt),corruption(hope that most of us are not),rising prices and being impotent to do anything about it.
I,for one was actually envious of him(and I am sure – a lot of us were),for here was this upstart who was doing everything that I wanted to do and was not able to do as the Army wouldn’t leave me.
He was the new Mahatma-(intelligent,articulate,middle class, smart, humorous, soft spoken, small and a Bania to boot, and someone who believed in the Indian Constitution and equality for all-with the Mahatma’s ability of convincing people, changing stands and justifying the same.
For a long time ,we were the lotus eaters-in a state of euphoria, eulogizing the David who destroyed the Goliath (Ms.Sheila Dikshit representing the Congress)and tolerated the fools he surrounded himself with – Kumar Biswas,Prashant Bhushan,Sisodia, their law minister and Shazia Ilmi(at least better looking then the run of the mill politicians).
But then the bubble burst-he did not do anything in his 49 days, except moving goalposts(his contention being that if he kicks the ball -it has to be a goal-even if you have to change the rules or move the goal post) till he scored a self goal.He started going around attending functions with Muslim leaders and wearing the skull cap(at least on 2 occasions) and spouting that communalism is a bigger issue than either development of corruption!!!!!!!
There is a feeling a Deja vu- a gentleman called V P Singh had promised us the same things and then divided the country hopelessly by introducing the Mandal Commission-at a time when the caste system was dying- and managing to do something that even the British, the Mughals or even Mir Jafar could not do.
Today, when you want to fight corruption or bring changes-everyone turns around and asks that that AK (Arvind Kejriwal) can’t or couldn’t,how can you?In future, nobody is going to going to trust anyone who wants to fight corruption-We have been bitten twice.
He has not failed-it is our hopes, our aspirations and our beliefs that have failed.
So,to my mind the question is not why he gets slapped – but why not often enough?

What is wrong with BJP?

BJP has emerged as an alternative, and after the nanga nach of AK49, the only alternative…

I often wonder what is wrong with BJP…. OK lots. Then let us see what does that mean….

a) BJP is hindu — Let us believe it for once. But in a country with 80% hindu.. how is one categorized as hindu or not hindu… The only way I can think of not being hindu is by going to a mosque, wear a muslim topi, start eating goat…  BJP is hindu as it is a main stream party of a nation with 80% hindus. PERIOD and there can be nothing wrong with that…..

What makes me wonder sometimes that while minorities rights have to be protected, no doubt, the majority also has a right. Any, an under lying assumption for minority rights is that as we live, minority rights get squashed in the natural process (democracy) so they need protection….   Unfortunately,  the majority in this country (the so called majority) sometimes wonders if they would have been better of as a minority…

b) BJP is non-secular — For once, let us be in agreement… . There can be nothing better then the TOI editorial on date (8/4/2013), wherein secularism is defined. How does one become secular .. very similar to the answer above…

On the above two points— let me for once pickup Pravin Togadai and make him the PM, or take your pick on the most fierce HIndu you can think off… What will he do ….

Will he kill all minorities in India…., will he ban education for minorities……, will he give free food to hindus……., will he divide the country once again on religious ground….., Will India loose its secular status and declare Hinduism as the state religion, WHAT IS IT THAT IS BEING FEARED….  COME ON LET US BE LOGICAL.. each one of us will have a better world to stay in… and… probably a bigger pie to eat from….

For everyone else, if there are any… which I doubt.. INDIA as and always has been a better place for guests then for its residents…

c) BJP is corrupt .… As we stand today, it is a matter of opportunities. BJP has not had as many opportunities as CONGRESS… but what are we fearing… KYA yeh congress ke bhi baap niklenge… I donot feel so …. We have lot more conscientious people/organizations around…..  Transparency international, something called AAP,  hence fear not … if if they want they cannot be more corrupt then Congress..

d) BJP has no vision — OK, but who has a vision…

e) BJP has no leaders — BJP leaders are there own making, unlike born to big families.

Let us vote for BJP this time and give them a comfortable majority to show us their metal, and in the ensuring 4 years prepare a good enough replacement for them for the next term… not be in a hurry like what AAP did this time….
